IT’S a new year and that means out with the old and in with the new when it comes to interior trends.

It can be overwhelming trying to determine which looks should stay and which have had their day so we’ve picked some key trends to get you inspired when it comes to decorating your home or office space this year.

Wallpaper

Cost effective and an ideal way to make a dramatic statement, wallpaper is here to stay in 2019.

"Wallpapers continues to dominate the decor space with bold styles right through to subtle textures available," Richard Misso creative director and founder of The Stylesmiths told lifestyle.com.au. "It is the perfect way to make a statement and layers into a space."

Experts say botanical prints, geometrics and big florals are key wallpaper trends for 2019.

"Bringing the outside in to your home has been a growing trend for many seasons,” said stylist and wallpaper expert Paula Taylor. “With the added wellness benefit of having plants surround you we are seeing more and more foliage creep into interiors.”

Our favourite wallpaper options are designed by Gold Coast creative, Sara Hingle, of These Walls [pictured].

Black, baby!

Dramatic and bold, black is a timeless hue which is being used across interiors and exteriors.

“Black is exciting because it creates a lot of drama and allows bold statements without being so trendy that you’ll want to change everything in 12 months,” Life Instyle exhibition manager Flyn Roberts told Home Beautiful. “To complement the black, browns, beiges, golds, and warm neutrals will see a resurgence.”

Multi-functional spaces

“With more and more people adopting the ‘Less is more’ attitude, we are seeing a shift in interior design,” Alex Kokolias of Lexi Interiors told Fresh Home.  “For 2019, I predict we will be seeing more multi-functional spaces. The murphy bed has been making a comeback and I think we’ll see even more modernized versions.”

Bold colours

Lets get loud!

Pantone officially named the  "sociable and spirited" Living Coral as its 2019 Colour of the Year so needless to say, bursts of bold colours will reign supreme this year.

“For a long time people have been in this grey phase,” said interior designer Lisa Gilmore. “While it's very open airy and feels good, people are starting to turn to colors to pull different feelings and emotions. We are seeing people want to be energised, and kind of wrapped in color.”

Go green

Surrounding ourselves with a plethora of plants in our homes and work places is a simple - and healthy - way to add character to a space.

“Instead of scattering individual plants all over the place, the newest idea is to concentrate them in one room, window or table,” contemporary design and lifestyle specialist, Philip Fimmano, told Vogue.

“Plant pots as well as carved stone containers will hold the jungle at bay when distributed on wooden tables, glass shelves and mirrored surfaces, reflecting the green abundance. Plants are in the process of taking over all other spaces, from offices and restaurants to public lobbies, hotel rooms and retail.”

Concrete

We could have told you this but timeless, durable concrete remains a key interior trend in 2019 as our love affair with fresh, natural materials continues.

Invest in a statement concrete bath tub to create your own sanctuary at home, or incorporate concrete elements like benchtops or basins in various hues into kitchens, bathrooms and power rooms.
