INSIDE THE MIAMI HOUSE
WHEN a renown lighting designer and the owner of an upscale, boutique tile and lighting showroom and lifestyle store decided to build their forever home in a hip beachside locale, it was never going to be an ordinary abode.
And after walking through the completed Miami House, owned by Three Balls Red founder Jasmine Dowthwaite and her lighting designer husband Ash, it’s fair to say there’s nothing ordinary about this contemporary home.
Together with Gold Coast production company Hotel Miami, the pair documented their experience building their modern luxe property for an Instagram TV series, which was a hit with Jasmine’s clients and renovation-obsessed folk alike.
We chatted to the ebullient Jas about her forever home - seriously, it is more like a designer boutique hotel - the custom saffron Oasis bath we created just for them and got her renovation hacks for you all.

How would you describe your home?
A black box with little pops of fun.
Was the building process a challenge, and what were the most difficult parts?
Communication! You have to make sure your planning and vision is across the board - never assume.
We created a beautiful custom saffron-hued Oasis bath for your bathroom, a bespoke kitchen bench top and vanities. Why did you decide to incorporate architectural concrete into the home?
We love Concrete Nation and felt a bit special having a bespoke coloured bath made just for us. It was important for us to add some colour into the home and the concrete mixed with the terrazzo is a perfect combination. We love that the bathroom truly is a little oasis.
We have a thriving design scene on the Gold Coast. Can you share some local suppliers you used and love?
Concrete Nation, obviously!
We used Wabi Projects hand screenprinted hemp fibre paper from India as we love the colour palette and mix of shapes.
Soktas’ hand blown pieces of art that double as lights.
Kajewski Miller specialise in brass - from pendant lights to our stunning credenza. Chris also had our rangehood wrapped in brass, which is a stunning focal point of our whole open-plan living kitchen area. We loved dealing with all the smaller local suppliers as it felt so personal.
I could really go on and on here ha! Others included luxwood; Lightworks’ bespoke brass pendant over the kitchen island that matched back perfectly with the Kajewski Miller range hood; tiles from Three Balls Red; Scandiluxe towel hooks; art from Claudio Kirac as I have wanted one of his paintings for about 20 years.
Our new wholesale brand Ukuba were behind the gorgeous terrazzo stumps in the bathroom, which are perfect to rest a glass of wine on while you are soaking in the bath!
What is your favourite room?
Oohhh this is hard! Maybe our room including the ensuite. It is such a relaxing space.
You are the owner of Three Balls Red and your hubby Ash is a celebrated lighting designer. You guys know your stuff! Tell us a little bit about your lighting plan.
We wanted the lighting to follow the minimalist design. We focused a lot around accenting art, tables and surfaces, and allowed the rest to sort of fall away. We only ever use the smallest amounts of light, and with the gentle additions of a soft pendant and a nice floor lamp, we love the texture the lighting creates.
Ash never lights things just for the sake of having light, he always has purpose with his plans, and the combinations of the subtlties of each source gives you the result in the end.
How many different styles of tiling did you use throughout the home and any favourites?
We used terrazzo as we just the way it feels under your feet; the large format black natural stone look tiles throughout the whole of downstairs and I love our kitchen splash which is an iced glazed terracotta tile. There are a few others but these are my stand-outs.
We love the moody black kitchen benchtop we made for you. Can you talk us through the kitchen design?
We love to entertain and cook so it was important for us to have an open space where everyone can sit and interact, eat, laugh, drink and play board games....
What were you go-to brands for linen and soft furnishings?
Moss Living for linen; it’s incredible to sleep on and washes like a dream. Simone from Kira and Kira was our go-to for soft furnishings. We love Pony Rider!
We are in love with your dining table! Where is it from?
Me too! This is from our new wholesale brand, Ukuba, which we will be launching very soon!
Any tips for those considering renovating/building?
Yes! Use an interior designer. We used Renee Britton, who works with us at Three Balls Red she was incredible and the vegemite in the Ash and Jas sandwich. Make sure you plan and are organised.
